In addition to the advanced training and capability evident in all the bios, the enjoyment we attain from helping patients is quite apparent.  Mary Ellen, Director of Finance and Operations, states that she is, “Amazed at the transformation that occurs in not only a patient’s appearance, but personality and life, when a smile is restored and healthy!”  Dr. Zhang’s motto is, “If a patient is happy, we are all happy.”  Amy feels rewarded when patients’ lives are changed by their new beautiful smiles. Pat says that the, “Patients become part of our extended family and she enjoys seeing them thrive.”  Connie relishes working in an environment where the patient always comes first.

Pi Dental Center New Year Reflections and Goals (Part 2)

Posted by Pi Dental Center on Jan 13, 2015 5:00:00 PM

2015 goals and plans

GOALS AND PLANS FOR 2015

The year 2015 gives Pi Dental Center another opportunity to welcome new patients and help them attain healthy mouths. We love to see our patients’ glow when they see their damaged mouths transformed into confidence-building, healthy dazzling megawatt smiles.

This year, patients will benefit from new dental technologies, techniques, materials and advanced laboratory procedures that have only become available recently.

Patients now have the option to be treated by our newest member, Dr. Stephen Alfano, a board certified maxillofacial prosthodontist, who joined our team last October.  Patients and staff are impressed with Dr. Alfano’s skills, enthusiasm, charm and warm responsive personality.

Dental treatment can put a strain on the budget.  We strive to find financial solutions to treat all of our dental patients’ problems. We offer financing options and various levels of treatment to help patients balance dental care needs and finances.

Digital radiography has improved considerably during the past few years, allowing for more thorough diagnostic evaluation and reduced exposure to radiation.  This technology enables us to design prostheses with greater accuracy, better engineering and improved esthetics.

Patients love their new AvaDent® digital dentures!  These digital dentures are the world’s first computer designed and computer manufactured dentures. Because AvaDent® Digital Dentures are computer designed and precision milled, they feel lighter and more natural in the mouth, fit precisely, resist bacteria and can be replaced quickly if lost or damaged.  In 2015, Pi Dental Center will also use AvaDent® Digital Dentures for fixed restorations in conjunction with dental implants.

Pi Dental Center leads the dental community in ongoing research in the quest to improve patient dental health, through pain-free dental care.  Our ongoing studies include investigation of smoking in the dental implant patient, self-esteem for dental implant patients, the biomechanics of All-On-4 dental implant protocol, and review of dental impression techniques.

The Pi team is Philadelphia's premiere dental implant center! With so many competitors popping up in the area claiming they're the best, our 30+ years of implant treatment, research and teaching speak for themselves.  Our team has placed over 40,000 dental implants.

We seek to show our world class professionalism, hospitality and surgical and prosthodontic talent to all of those who walk through the Pi doors offering courses for dental specialists and students in subjects like, “Immediate Loading of Dental Implants Using The Teeth In a Day® Protocol,” “All-on-4® Treatment Concept: Complete Arch Oral Rehabilitation and Immediate Function Using Tilted Implants and AvaDent® Fully Milled Monolithic Screw-Retained Prosthesis,” and “Advanced Guided Surgery with Zygoma Implants.”

The Pi Foundation will present, “Smiles Uncorked,” on Thursday evening, April 23, 2015. The fund-raising event will take place at the beautiful Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and include several wine tasting stations featuring world class vineyards. Tastings will even take place on the Arboretum's famous Out-on-a-Limb Forest Canopy walk. If wine isn't your thing, there will also be a vodka bar featuring the Pi Foundation's signature cocktail. Throughout the event there will be gourmet small plates, live music and an auction featuring trips, one of a kind collectibles and other wine related items. Proceeds from the event will support treatment for deserving Pi Foundation patients.

Pi Dental Center is active in supporting worthy community endeavors. This April, Pi Dental Center will sponsor the Ambler Environmental Advisory Council’s Earth Fest promoting a clean, safe and healthy environment and increasing environmental awareness.

Each year, the Pi Team gets recertified by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support for CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator).  The yearly classes have become a Pi Dental Center tradition with everyone from the doctors and clinical staff to the front desk and technical departments in attendance. Rigorous standards are outlined ensuring a comprehensive response will be followed in the event of an emergency.  We maintain an emergency action plan, a fire prevention strategy, and a state of the art infection control procedure using the latest techniques and guidelines. We conduct continuous evaluations so that all departments function at their optimum level and all practices are current.

This year Pi Dental Center remains focused on delivering radiant smiles using the highest quality dental restorations in a competent yet friendly environment.

We encourage our patients to schedule routine maintenance in advance so that small problems are discovered and handled quickly and efficiently.  We are proud to have four outstanding dental hygienists to provide effective and thorough prophylactic care.  With new technologies, team members and energy, we are taking Pi Dental Center to new heights in 2015!

The Father of Modern Dental Implants

Posted by Pi Dental Center on Dec 23, 2014 10:01:00 AM

Pi Brånemark at Pi Dental Center

On December 20, 2014, Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the father of modern dental implants, died in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, leaving family, friends and colleagues all over the world in mourning.  All of us at Pi are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Brånemark.

Dr. Thomas Balshi and Pi Dental Center have had a long association with Professor Brånemark.  Dr. Balshi received his surgical and prosthetic implant training from him and they later collaborated on many dental implant research projects. Brånemark and Balshi have remained long-time friends.

Without the work of Per-Ingvar Brånemark, osseointegrated dental implants might not exist. His discovery of the phenomenon of osseointegration in 1952 and subsequent research has revolutionized the fields of dental, maxillofacial and orthopedic rehabilitation.

Osseointegration refers to a direct structural and functional connection between ordered, living bone and the surface of a load-carrying implant. Dr. Brånemark demonstrated that, under carefully controlled conditions, titanium could be structurally integrated into living bone with a very high degree of long-term predictability.

In the early 1990’s, Professor Brånemark came to Pi Dental Center. During his stay, he visited the clinical facility and also attended our annual “Festival of Formerly Forbidden Foods.” There he was introduced to over 200 of our Brånemark dental implant patients, and saw first-hand the amazing effect that his groundbreaking work had on patients in the U.S.

Dr. Balshi said it succinctly, “Losing Professor Brånemark is like losing a father. He has been an inspiration and a mentor to hundreds of dental colleagues and bio-medical researchers all over the world.”

Friends and close associates of Dr. Brånemark, call him “PI.” To honor this great man, our practice incorporated his initials into our company name. This is one of the reasons we are called Pi Dental Center!

In 2015, the world of dentistry will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of applied osseointegration. Pi Dental Center and dental professionals worldwide will celebrate the innovations of Dr. Brånemark and the remarkable benefits of dental implants.

Pi Dental Center Celebrates National Prosthodontics Awareness Week

Posted by Pi Dental Center on Apr 23, 2012 5:22:00 PM

Happiness is Pi Dental Center

At Fort Washington’s Pi Dental Center, we are celebrating the achievements this week of two board certified prosthodontists.  Dr. Tom Balshi, founder of the center and his partner, Dr. Glenn Wolfinger, are Fellows of the American College of Prosthodontists and are actively involved in cutting edge research, education of the profession and the public, comprehensive patient care, and the promotion of the specialty of Prosthodontics.

Our week kicked off with very special guests to VIEWPOINT, the conference venue at the Pi Dental Center.  Graduate dental students from Harvard University Dental School and from The University of Connecticut School of Dentistry are present for an advanced course in Pi’s trademarked Teeth In a Day™ dental implant protocol.

On Wednesday, Pi will host Open House for the public, with mini-lectures, tours, free consultations, festive refreshments and surprise giveaways. Treated patients will be on hand to share their experiences with prospective patients. Throughout the week all patients and guests will receive our brand new specially designed Pi chocolate bar, a symbol that patients with prosthetic smiles have no fear of candy!

A sparkling, healthy smile can be a life changer.  If a serious smile investment is on your “bucket list,” be sure to find a prosthodontist.  Their training beyond the basic four-year dental degree is rigorous and includes the esthetic and engineering skills required to ensure the long range success of this most important life asset.

Be diligent about researching credentials and asking questions.  Do not rely on sources such as Philadelphia Magazine, where lists of specialists are not monitored by professional organizations and include doctors who limit their practices but have no actual training in a formal prosthodontic program sanctioned by The American College of Prosthodontists.

During National Prosthodontics Awareness Week, the Pi Dental Center especially wishes to reach out to anyone with unanswered questions about their dental health.  Our team is prepared to respond online or call us at 888-TEETH-20.

Temple University Broadcasts Dental Implant Treatment Documentary

Posted by Pi Dental Center on Aug 25, 2011 6:29:00 PM

Patient Photo

Through the extraordinary energy of Temple University’s President, Dr. Ann Weaver Hart, the candy apple red Temple has become both visible and vibrant in the City of Brotherly Love. Her wise embrace is not  merely focused on creating well educated, driven- to- succeed graduates, but on connecting Temple alums in ways that make a stronger, more sensitive, more compassionate Philadelphia.

On Monday, August 29, The Temple University School of Communication and Theater will rebroadcast a tender story of how the technological skills of one graduate dramatically changed the life of another.  The documentary, entirely created by the School of Communication and Theater, illustrates how medicine and compassion intertwine to create an astounding smile makeover in a matter of hours.Temple University Logo

Dr. Tom Balshi, a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontists and practicing specialist in Fort Washington, also serves as a clinical professor to Temple’s Kornberg School of Dentistry. The woman whose life he touched for the love of Temple is Suzanne Bartch, a single mother in the city who recently received her Masters Degree in Social Work from Temple

The documentary will broadcast at 12:30 and 8:30 PM on August 29, or 5:30 AM on August 30. In Philadelphia County it can be viewed on Comcast 50 and Verizon 45.  Outside the city, it can be viewed on line at templetv.net at the same times.  For more information, call the Pi Dental Center in Fort Washington at 215-646-6334.

Prosthodontics Awareness Week a la Pi Dental Center

Prosthodontics Awareness Week a la Pi Dental Center

April 4-9, 2011

Pi Team At Open House

When the American College of Prosthodontists announced their first designation of a Prosthodontics Awareness Week, the Pi team embraced the idea with gusto.  Here was an opportunity to showcase all that distinguishes a prosthodontic practice from a neighborhood dental office.

Drs. Thomas Balshi and Glenn Wolfinger

We started with a simple question: Do YOU have a prosthodontist?  We threw it out there on the internet, in the local newspapers, and in banks and restaurants and supermarkets.  Then we elected to answer the question comprehensively by opening our doors to the community.

The Pi Dental Center invited prospective patients and all of our patient family to Open House.  We provided tours, question and answer sessions, refreshments, and a rolling slide show of dental trivia, before and after photos, and most importantly, bold statements that defined what a prosthodontist really is. Astoundingly one of the most successful parts of the event turned out to be the conversations between treated patients and those contemplating a whole new smile. The articulated enthusiasm and spirit of “go for it” were overwhelming.  Giveaway bags and a raffle rounded out the day.

Andrea Smiles at Pi Dental Center Open House

Throughout the week, silver trays of decorated cookies in the shape of toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes graced our reception area.  In early March our staff were invited to suggest a clever tag line to write on the cookies.  Twenty-five staff actually submitted forty-six entries.  The judges chose:  Prosthodontics is for smart cookies!

Everyone from the mailman to the last patient on Friday afternoon took home a brush and a tube.

So what does make a prosthodontist different?  Besides his superior training (at least two years of specialty education beyond regular dental school), a prosthodontist has extraordinary vision. A prosthodontist blends science and esthetics, engineering and spatial relations to create natural looking teeth, custom designed for each individual patient, that function with precision and radiate health and beauty. Open House Refreshments It does not matter whether it is one single tooth or an entire upper and lower dentition; a prosthodontist’s eye is geared toward perfection.  He/she is not simply maintaining teeth but rather is building or rebuilding one of humanity’s most powerful assets. A prosthodontist has a sense of pride in smiles that is born of passion and education second to none in the dental profession. When one is contemplating the reconstruction of a smile, the prosthodontist is the specialist that will best manage the delivery of care and provide an outcome that will exceed expectations.   Prosthodontics Week 2011
